Live in Print
Why invest in a photographer, if you don’t invest in print?
We are surrounded by consumerism and I don’t want to sound like another person convincing you to buy something. I feel passionate about the value of photography and equally about the investment into printing. I find the importance of printing your memories is highly under valued. You don’t “need” everything targeted to you. I’ll be first to admit I’ve been influenced, some worth it, some not. More recently, social media feels like a never-ending ad of things I might be interested in. When I open social apps, I look for a few minutes and then ask myself, what am I doing? What did I just gain from that? Did I accomplish anything? Then I usually shut it off because the answer is nothing. Reflecting this way, in the moment, I find myself consuming less and I honestly love it. I now find myself going on with a purpose, mostly to post or engage on my platform but also learn and see what I could be doing better or looking for inspiration. It is always a balancing act.
A few weeks ago, my friend Anya said, “Digital is not a final product.” A simple statement but it really hit a button for me. As a photographer, it is easier to hand off digitals but that is not where I want my clients memories to live. I want my clients to enjoy their images every day. In any form, I want them in print, so I’ll encourage you to do so in even if it isn’t through me.
I offer a handful of curated products that I adore and stand by. If there is one print item I would ideally love every client to walk away with, it would be an album. I understand that albums aren’t for everyone and many wish to have the flexibility to do what they want with digital files, but I question whether those images will ever be seen again. I’d be curious to know how many people actually print their images after investing in a photographer. The last time I did a poll, it didn’t shock me that more people did not vs did.
I remember as a child I loved looking through photos of past trips, the mundane days spent at home and sharing those moments over and over again with my family. One of my fondest adult memories with my grandmother was spending a few days with her going through hundreds of images of the people that came before us and living that history together.
